International Course on Integrated Water Resource Management and the Role of Drainage

To be effective and to ensure equitability between the various water users while safeguarding vital ecosystems, the planning, development and management of drainage (and irrigation) systems should occur within a broader framework of water management. In the 3-weeks course module “Drainage in the context of IWRM” the scope of drainage and irrigation within the currently widely adopted paradigm “Integrated Water Resources Management” will be addressed. The various implications of IWRM for agricultural water management will be presented and participants will learn to put their daily land and water issues in the perspective of IWRM. They will also learn to apply some practical tools in IWRM, such as Remote Sensing techniques, Geographical Information Systems and (optional) integrated water assessment models or regional salt assessment models.

Aims
After the module the participant will:
  • Understand the concept of IWRM and its legal, institutional, managerial and technical implications
  • Understand the role of drainage in IWRM
  • Be familiar with the principles and applications of important tools in IWRM, such as Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems
  • Be able to apply assessment methods for water uses and water resources
  • Be fully aware that land and water interventions have repercussions on the entire water chain and that water uses are interdependent
  • Have commitment to involve stakeholders in the planning of any land and water interventions
  • Be able to relate the broader scope of integrated water resources management in day-to-day work
