International Course on Institutions in Water Management
Course participants carrying out a group assignment

Background
Investments and sustainable operation of water management infrastructure such as for drainage require a proper institutional setting. In this module the participants will explore the institutional changes that are necessary for practicing agricultural water management within the framework of Integrated Water Resources Management. Topics include: Design Characteristics of Sustainable Water Management Organizations, Service-oriented Management, Irrigation Management Transfer, and Cost Recovery of Water Services. International experiences will be frequently related to own experience of participants. Experience from the Netherlands will be presented to illustrate parallels to international developments and as examples of integrating concepts and tools.

Aims
After the module the participant will be able to explain:
  • Why water institutions in the past could work fairly independently
  • Why the institutional arrangements of the past are no longer adequate today
  • What major institutional changes are required for implementing IWRM
  • What the main difficulties are in implementing these changes
  • What concepts and tools are available for resolving these problems

Tuition fee
The tuition fee is EURO 4,000. This amount includes computer use, lecture notes, selected software, and excursions.
