International Course on Institutions in Water Management
Background
Investments and sustainable operation of water management infrastructure
such as for drainage require a proper institutional setting. In
this module the participants will explore the institutional changes
that are necessary for practicing agricultural water management
within the framework of Integrated Water Resources Management. Topics
include: Design Characteristics of Sustainable Water Management
Organizations, Service-oriented Management, Irrigation Management
Transfer, and Cost Recovery of Water Services. International experiences
will be frequently related to own experience of participants. Experience
from the Netherlands will be presented to illustrate parallels to
international developments and as examples of integrating concepts
and tools.
Aims
After the module the participant will be able to explain:
- Why water institutions in the past could work fairly independently
- Why the institutional arrangements of the past are no longer
adequate today
- What major institutional changes are required for implementing
IWRM
- What the main difficulties are in implementing these changes
- What concepts and tools are available for resolving these problems
Tuition fee
The tuition fee is EURO 4,000. This amount includes computer use,
lecture notes, selected software, and excursions.
