International Course on Drainage criteria (Drainage Systems in Balance)

If an intervention in the agricultural water management is required, which involves either a new (artificial) drainage system or the modification of an existing drainage system, the objectives and specifications of the system (drainage criteria) need to be established. Course participants working on a computer assignmentFor this purpose the participants learn to assess the agricultural practices (cropping pattern, irrigation) and the physical setting (climate, topography, soils, land use, surface water, groundwater, etc.) of the area, being part of the problem analysis. Major attention will be paid to water and salt balances, which are both critical for drainage assessments.

In the 3-weeks course module “Drainage Criteria” the participants will learn to establish drainage criteria, considering the physical setting, costs, benefits, risks, water discharge, management of nutrients and contaminants, environmental factors / nature conservation, engineering aspects, water policies and legislation, etc.

Aims
After the module the participant will be able to:

  • Explain physical and agro-hydrological principles underlying drainage of agricultural land
  • Understand the relevant aspects of drainage for agriculture under conditions of waterlogging and salinity
  • Make sound estimates of parameters and calculate variables related to rainfall runoff and surface drainage
  • Implement statistical approach for processing and analysing data from natural and research observations
  • Set-up a survey and data analysis to solve simple waterlogging problems
  • Formulate drainage design criteria
  • Relate the home-country drainage situation to the history of drainage world-wide and in The Netherlands.
